Graduate student specializing in 18th century British literature with an emphasis on the novel. Lover of John Milton, Jane Austen, and Charlotte Bronte. (Yes, I know none of them published in the 18th century.) Occasional writer of lengthy fictions, seven-time NaNoWriMo participant and former Office of Letters and Light intern. Reader of much young adult and/or fantasy lit. Lifetime lover of Diane Duane's Young Wizards series, recently fanatic about Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy, blaming it all on Harry Potter. Wanderluster. Left my heart in London, reclaim it bit by bit through tea and Doctor Who and Sherlock and Downton Abbey. |

NEWS: Space Shuttle Enterprise completes historic flyover of New York City on the back of a modified 747 before delivery to the intrepid museum. This is totally an actual photograph of what actually happened.
Ok, scratch the photos I had up earlier and the dozens more floating around.
This wins everything.
DEAR GOD YES. (Though why would you ever decommission that Enterprise?!)
The little girl who wanted to be an astronaut is so happy to have finally seen her first space shuttle in flight, but so sad to know that it’s also her last.
Image description: An Expedition 30 crew member aboard the International Space Station took this nighttime photograph of the Atlantic coast. Large metropolitan areas and other easily recognizable sites from the Virginia/Maryland/Washington, D.C. area are visible. Long Island and the New York City area can be seen in lower right area. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are near the center.

My old stomping grounds. How gorgeous.

(chucks Philly under the chin)
My first thought on seeing this image was that it was a string of neural pathways firing. Then, I saw the space station. Woah.
Then, I realized, this is home. This neural network of manmade fire arcing out through the night, this web of life strung out on pinpricks. This planet of mine. This city, newly-mine in some senses but also so very deeply a part of who I am, long before I realized that it was. This world defined by light and not by borders.

Good thing my end of town doesn’t make it onto this map, otherwise I would be all the more frustrated that this scarf is astronomically beyond any reasonable person’s price range.
“I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly.”
Over break, my sister and I re-watched this move, and let me tell you it is beautiful. I would say that I wish there were more rom-coms like this movie, but really I just wish there were more movies like this. Movies that take women’s professional and personal desires seriously, movies with actors impeccably cast for their roles, movies where dialogue skips and snaps and zings.
In short: more please!

I LIVE IN A WORLD OF MAGIC AND WONDER (granted we already knew that this was the definition of New York because, hello, Young Wizards)
BECAUSE I WALKED ACROSS THE STREET FROM MY APARTMENT TO THE BOOKSTORE THAT USUALLY DOES NOT HAVE MUCH SFF OR YA
AND THEY HAD THIS ON MARKDOWN!
Good thing I was a diligent student earlier today, won’t feel bad about reading & liveblogging this til ungodly hours of the morning, surviving on tea & chocolate biscuits & girlpower & MAGIC!
(In case you can’t tell I am expecting a lot out of this book but luxheroica’s judgment = flawless, so I really doubt I will be disappointed. Also do you see that tagline? WHEN SCIENCE AND MAGIC COLLIDE! That is basically a definition of every book I have ever loved, ever.)

I’d never particularly cared about New York until I read the YW books. They’re pretty much solely responsible for my interest in visiting there one day. I’d love to take a YW tour of the city, if only that were a thing :P
I will someday single-handedly make that a thing, if necessary! :D Seriously, the first time I visited, I geeked out over all the YW-related stuff. And in general I’m pretty sure the reason why this city has come to feel like “home” so quickly is that it feels like Young Wizards, which ultimately amounts to about the same thing.

So… New York, eh?
YES NEW YORK, EH!
But seriously. This isn’t even my half of town, and just looking at it makes me grin like an idiot. This is my city of magic and I don’t care who knows it.
