Edwardian mystery teens. ‘Was that the house settling—or was it the ghost of an angry Jacobite?!?!’
Wowwwww let me count the ways I want this.
So before seeing the caption I was pretty sure this was a picture of Deryn and Alek on some post-WWI spy mission for Dr. Barlow. After seeing the caption, still pretty sure that’s what it is.
llustration for the chapter three “A Song of Choice” (“Deep Wizardry”, first Russian edition).

The novels of my childhood that created the city of my dreams (which happened to be a real city I could move to, which is awesome). <3
Dairine Callahan is amazing. Here’s a fifteen minute sketch of her because, apparently, I procrastinate like a mad thing.
She’s fierce and strong and so, so smart and will fuck you up if you mess with her people - her sister Nita, Roshaun, her dad, Kit. She gave birth (kind of) to an entire world of computer people. She plays with stars.
Basically, if you’re not reading Young Wizards, I’ve got to ask - why the hell not?
Dairine Callahan, BAMF. (Also, I love the simplicity of this sketch that still manages to get across both her deep yearning for everything beyond what she can understand and the confidence she has in her ability to go boldly in the direction of her dreams and desires.)
Nita Callahan, from Diane Duane’s Young Wizards series (in Wizard of Mars, when she’s all decked out in the sexy, revealing Martian outfit)
Someday I’ll scan my drawings instead of just taking pictures with my phone. Sadly, that day is not today.
Aside from the skinniness, which seems slightly out of proportion with how Nita views herself (or just with how I mentally construct images of Nita), this is just perfect. I love the outfit design, but even more I love the HAIR, and that pose that says she means business. I’m pretty sure if she gave me that glare I’d turn tail and run!
Nita, from the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane.
Found this in an old sketchbook from a few years back. :) Thought I’d post it just for funsies.
This is lovely — I love how it meshes the moment of finding the manual with the moment of reading the Oath!
"There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others."
What’s this you’re dreaming of?
omg wishbone OH MY GOD IT’S WISHBONE
Oh man, Wishbone was my gateway into literature the way The Magic School Bus was my gateway into science. I remember reading a Wishbone version of The Odyssey as a third-grader. Six years later when we actually read parts of the real thing (in translation of course, but still) I remembered almost all of it, thanks to this little dog. I wonder if any of the show is available online somewhere…
